Mistral Large 4 has joined the Open Model Weights curated Leading selection. This is not simply a reaction to a model announcement: the original first-party checkpoint is now downloadable, its exact files and repository revision can be checked, and an independent intelligence comparison includes the released system. Mistral's hosted API preview from October 6 must be distinguished from the October 29 availability of open weights. Our new canonical model profile follows the actual publisher repository rather than an API-only description.
The publisher describes a natively multimodal mixture-of-experts architecture with about 1.05 trillion total logical parameters and 52 billion active per token when embedding and output layers are included. Text and image inputs are paired with a one-million-token context configuration. The original published weights and separate lower-precision variants are different artifacts. Sparse activation does not mean the system requires storage for only 52 billion weights: download footprint, sharding, vision processing, long-context KV memory and operational concurrency remain serious infrastructure questions.
The reason for Leading is external comparative relevance combined with a verifiable original release. Artificial Analysis lists Mistral Large 4 in its current open-weight intelligence comparison. Comparison scores depend on benchmark revision, reasoning setting, evaluation date and the exact checkpoint or hosted configuration. We do not translate Mistral's claimed speed, coding ability or security performance into independent Open Model Weights results. The registry clearly separates published technical observations, publisher claims and independent ranking signals.
Licensing also deserves attention. The model is distributed under the Mistral Ecosystem Open-Weight License, not unrestricted Apache 2.0 or plain MIT. It grants commercial and noncommercial permissions under conditions while requiring a separate commercial agreement to operate a paid Model-as-a-Service business. Our new model page records that exception with a source link. The addition gives readers a more complete picture of a relevant European open-weight frontier system without confusing public weights with unrestricted deployment or promising unmeasured production performance.
What this changes for the evidence layer
The Leading listing links to the source-verified original Mistral Large 4 checkpoint, exact repository SHA, weight files, legal terms and per-field evidence history. No OMW model inference or independent throughput measurement has been performed.

This brief is based on the cited primary source. Performance, benchmark and comparative claims remain attributed unless Open Model Weights publishes an independent measurement.
