IBM Granite introduced two finished Granite Switch 4.1 checkpoints, based on Granite 4.1 8B and 30B models, in an October 15 technical launch. Their Hugging Face cards identify an October 14 model release and Apache-2.0 licensing. The practical story is modular deployment: one checkpoint combines conventional text generation, a general-purpose decision adapter, a Guardian safety adapter and an English speech-to-text encoder instead of requiring a separate base model for every stage of a workflow.
The decision and Guardian components are activated LoRA adapters selected through control tokens. IBM explains that an adapter can reuse the base model's existing key-value cache when a workflow shifts from chat to classification. The decision adapter accepts a state, a question and labelled alternatives and returns a probability distribution across the options. This is task-specific decision scoring, not evidence that the model can autonomously execute tools or make reliable choices in every domain.
Granite Speech 5.0 TurboCTC adds the audio-input path. The official 8B and 30B cards describe it as a separate 470-million-parameter English ASR encoder, with its transcript inserted into the chat context. The speech encoder and language model are not jointly trained, and the documented transcription output is lowercase and unpunctuated. These limitations matter for users expecting multilingual audio understanding, speaker attribution or punctuation-ready transcripts.
IBM presents demos and comparisons with other decision systems, and describes vLLM and Transformers backend support. Those published speed and accuracy results are not independently reproduced here. Operators evaluating the releases should inspect the exact 8B or 30B repository, model composition instructions, backend versions, adapter activation behavior and the intended decision schema. The significance is a source-available, inspectable pattern for sharing serving infrastructure across specialized model tasks—not a blanket claim of benchmark superiority.
What this changes for the evidence layer
Inspect ibm-granite/granite-switch-4.1-8b and -30b as two distinct official model repositories, including actual checkpoint files, Apache-2.0 terms and composed adapter/encoder metadata. Do not equate bundled components with an end-to-end native multimodal base model. IBM's latency, leaderboard and decision-score statements are publisher results; model registry verification must independently establish the artifact and accurate task-specific capabilities.
